Depression in spring: what causes seasonal exacerbation

In the spring, nature wakes up and all living things enjoy the sun and warmth. But for some reason, it is in the spring that longing and gloom attack. They feel bad, fall into apathy or are annoyed by trifles, their mood worsens, they do not want to do anything.

Scientists have not been able to fully determine the exact causes of this phenomenon. However, there are assumptions about a number of factors that determine seasonal depression.

Why does depression occur in the spring?
1. General exhaustion

During a protracted autumn and long winter, the body’s reserves are coming to an end. The content of vitamins, trace elements, and other biologically active substances is reduced. There is the so-called spring vitamin deficiency, characterized by a deficiency of vital vitamins. Signs of vitamin starvation are symptoms of depression. So, for example, vitamins of group B are necessary for the normal activity of the nervous system. When there is a lack of it, disruptions in its work occur, which is manifested by a decrease in mood, fatigue, unwillingness to do anything. Vitamin A deficiency leads to sleep disorders, which exacerbates an already serious psychological condition. Hypovitaminosis C causes a breakdown, apathy.

2. The lack of ultraviolet radiation

In the spring, the sun appears more often, but still it is not enough for a depleted organism. And the sun is a necessary condition for the synthesis of vitamin D: it is produced in the skin under the influence of sunlight. This vitamin takes part in the production of serotonin – the “hormone of joy”, and it is not surprising that its deficiency affects the mental state of a person.

3. Change of biorhythms

We are part of nature and are largely dependent on natural biorhythms. In nature, winter is a time of rest, spring is an awakening. But in winter we have to lead the same active life as at other times of the year, so our biorhythms are disrupted. This affects the functioning of the nervous system, which begins to malfunction, causing poor health and low mood.

4. Lack of movement

In winter, when the street is cold and dark early, we prefer to stay at home. This means that the body lacks movement, and the brain lacks oxygen. Hypoxia (oxygen starvation) impairs the functioning of the brain, due to the lack of movement, the production of the “hormone of joy” – dopamine, and serotonin decreases, which contributes to the development of depression.

5. Weather fluctuations

In spring, the weather is very unstable: only the sun came out – and then the sky was overcast and it started to rain or snow. Atmospheric pressure also changes dramatically. All this negatively affects the stability of the nervous system and can contribute to seasonal depression.

6. Hormonal imbalance

Spring is a time of exacerbations of many diseases, including diseases of the thyroid gland. Hormonal imbalance caused by disorders of the thyroid gland leads to a loss of strength, lethargy, apathy (lack of hormones) or insomnia, irritability, nervousness (excess hormones).

What is the difference between spring depression and classical
Spring depression is clearly seasonal. It begins at the end of winter and ends on its own in late April – early May.

There is a seasonal depression “from scratch”, it is not preceded by tragedies, emotional upheavals, family troubles or problems at work, serious illnesses.

With spring depression, a person has no organic brain damage, mental illness.

Classical depression can be caused by hormonal causes. The role of thyroid hormones in the occurrence of seasonal depression due to exacerbation of endocrine disorders in the spring has already been noted. But hormonal imbalances can occur regardless of the time of year. So, hormonal causes are caused by depression associated with hormonal changes in adolescence, in women after childbirth and during menopause.

To understand whether the pathological condition is caused by a deficiency or excess of thyroid hormones, it is necessary to take tests for thyroid hormones T2 – thyroxine and T3 – triiodothyronine, as well as for TSH – thyroid stimulating hormone, which regulates their production.

Should seasonal depression be treated?
Fortunately, with spring depression, you can do without medications only if it is not caused by hormonal disorders. Serious treatment, taking antidepressants for seasonal depression is not required. But this does not mean that everything can be left to chance. Otherwise, the disease can drag on, and then you will have to resort to medications.

Fruits are a good source of vitamins.
First of all, care must be taken to restore the normal functioning of the body, for which it is necessary to change the way of life and the nature of nutrition.

1. Nutrition

It should be varied, balanced in its main components. The menu should include more vegetables and fruits, dairy products. You should not refuse meat dishes, fish, poultry – the meat contains essential amino acids necessary for the synthesis of proteins, B vitamins, many trace elements.
